Six years ago, Cary Grant was stripping and waxing floors for a living when his boss told him they were going to try something new. "He said we were going to stain some concrete and I thought he was out of his mind," Grant said. "But now, six years later, it's what I do and it's what I love."

Grant decided to take the burgeoning home and commercial design trend and run with it. The 10-year Las Vegan started his own firm, Floor Seasons, earlier this year. The company deals exclusively with concrete staining; using muriatic acid and different color solutions o infuse the top layer of the surface leaving a permanent, custom design.

Grant has already compiled an impressive portfolio, which can be seen at www.floorseasons.com of different homes, bars, restaurants, churches, offices and retail shops that have used his services. Now that he's out on his own, Grant said he has much more freedom to work with each client and come up with more creative designs.

"It really is the ultimate in custom designing," he said. "It has definitely grown and become more popular in recent years, but it's still new enough to where not everyone is doing concrete staining yet. It is the next big thing, creatively because there really are no limits to what you can do, and the fact that it's low maintenance impresses people, also."

The acid used creates a permanent pigment etched in the concrete, although the color and appearance is bright and clear enough to look as if it was painted on. Grant said the finish will not peel, chip or crack, the only maintenance required is an occasional mopping and the process is less expensive than tile installation and usually takes from three to five days.

Although he still gets plenty of requests from businesses large and small, Grant said he would stick exclusively to residential work if he could because he enjoys helping customers personalize their homes.

"Since I started my own business, everything stops and starts with me. So when I'm doing (a business), there are other contractors and things to deal with," he said. "I would do all houses if I could because I just like working with people on their own ideas. If they know exactly what they want: I can do it. If they're not sure, we can look at the surrounding space and come up with something special."

Not only has the early success of Floor Seasons allowed Grant to work for himself, but it also gives him a creative outlet. "I guess I've always been kind of an artsy person, and this gives me a way of expressing it," he said.
